Mmmmm

Prison stuff makes me uncomfortable, I'm not really sure why, but it always has. But I decided to read this book anyway because my last experience with S.A. Reid was really good. I was very much hoping that this lives up to standard. Anyway, this book (set in the 1930s) tells the story of Gabriel (top dog of the prison) and Joey (disgraced young doctor), who develop a complicated relationship bound very much by the confines of the prison. It's a short book, and anything I say is liable to give the game away, so I won't go too far into the plot. The point of this review is that you must read this book. It was beautiful; well-written and heartbreaking, if a little too short. I think Reid is adept at humanizing her characters in ways that make them flawed and relatable. I enjoyed this book, not in a fun way, but in made-me-think way; which is often more rewarding.
